The Witch of the West is Dead (2008)

To do magic or work miracles you need strength of spirit. To become a witch the most important thing is strength of will. The power to make up your mind and do what you’ve decided to do. Until you can overcome that most difficult part, you might not get what you want. But give it a try anyway. 西の魔女が死んだ (The Witch of the West is Dead)

Whenever I go out in to the world, I see so many Kenji-sans and I cry when they cut down the trees or dig up the earth in my sanctuary. I want to stay at Grandma’s house, where time stands still and there are fields of wild strawberries for birthday presents and biscuits baked at midnight and flowers in my tea cup. I would never leave.

Oh, I must see this film, I got so curious once I saw a still on your tumblr.

And I wish I still had somewhere to go, somewhere time stands still. I hope you can trick the clocks another time, ladybird. xxx

    • Skylark says:

You must! I am going to post about another film soon, a French one, that I think you will like.

Oh Skye, I saw The Witch of the West is Dead today (when I should have been studying, of course), it was so very lovely and comforting. I wish I could buy a DVD.

I’m looking forward to your next film, you have the best of all tastes. xx

        • Skylark says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed it too. It is a very comforting film, I can see myself rewatching it on rainy days. If I find somewhere online to buy the DVD I’ll let you know.

How I would love to be in the place in the pictures. It all looks so tranquil and lovely and beautiful…

    • Skylark says:

I could live inside this film, it is full of peace and comfort. White sheets dried in the sun on the lavender bushes.

  3. Wangari M. says:

I just want to get lost in those movie stills. Not only because of their tranquil nature and beauty but also because I miss the days drenched in sunshine and birdsong. Thanks for sharing (your blog is just wonderful!)

    Happy Sunday

  4. KeKe says:

This post is great!! The film looks wonderful and every now and again, I find myself looking for the very same thing…a place where time stands still~

  5. Oh how beautiful! Such wonderful images and lovely prose. Your blog is such a treasure. The last picture of the house–– with the cobblestone trail lined with flowers–– looks straight out of a fairy tale!

I also wish I could bottle up time so I could use it how I wanted; then I could freeze it during life’s perfect moments. But since I can’t do that, I instead try to create perfect moments all the time. Having magical experiences so close together can give the sense of time stopping. Now that Spring is here, magical moments will be even easier to discover. <3

    • Skylark says:

That is a wonderful way to live. I try and do that too, but I can’t help feeling it would be easier in another situation. I’m glad Autumn is nearly here, the summer has been as harsh as your winter.

    • Seashell says:

Its a wonderful way to live your life! :D

  6. raspberry pancakes says:

How beautiful! I would do anything to live in that cottage…

  7. Darling, your entire blog is a sanctuary!

I’m sure you will create that special place in your own world someday. ^_^

  8. Princessemeline says:

What beautiful shots these are. They seem so magical. Like others have said, they look as if they’re something out of a fairytale.

I too sometimes wish time would stand still. I often wish I could go back to my early childhood, and relive all the magical moments I had. Fancy tea parties with my two cousins and our great aunt. Playing all day in her great, big, flower garden, while the Summer sun kept us warm. O yes, and sleepovers filled with giggles and smiles. Things seemed so much simpler and beautiful back then. But we must remind ourselves that without the flow of time we would have no new adventures. No more new memories to make. That would be so sad if we lost those things. I know the future can be so crule some times, but remember it can be such a blessing to.

    • Skylark says:

Your childhood sounds so cheerful and fun, I’m glad you have those memories. New adventures are fun too, I guess sometimes we just need to step out of our lives for a bit and regather our strength, places like this cottage are perfect for that.

  9. Sora-smiles says:

I haven’t do any comment on here lately.. but I still read all of your stories.
This does seem like an interesting movie.
All the pictures are lovely! Reminds me of my grandma’s house..

    • Skylark says:

I’ve missed your comments Sora-chan! Your grandma’s house must be a magical place.

      • Sora-smiles says:

Hello, it’s been more than a month since your last story..
Are you doing okay? I hope you are.

        • Skylark says:

Dear Sora, thank you for your concern! I feel terribly guilty that I haven’t posted in nearly two months, however my mind has been quite occupied with my travel plans (I am about to spend a month in England.) So please forgive me. I will try to post before I go, and I’m sure I will have hundreds of photos to share when I get back. I hope you are well also. xx Skye

  10. Oh wow. I must see this. It looks enchanting. Being stuck in a city, I miss the everyday touch and whispers of nature surrounding me. A movie like this looks like it would lift my spirits and help me escape a bit. Thanks so much for posting it <3

    • Skylark says:

I think you would really enjoy it. I try and find bits of nature in the city, but nothing compares to real wilderness.

  11. Sarah says:

oh this film sounds really good, a must watch yes? :) x

  12. Francesca says:

i feel the same, too much destruction of what created us in the first place tears my heart apart.

trees, wildnerness, the scent of flowers on the evening breeze – these are things we all need. I’m so glad you have somewhere to go ♥

    • Skylark says:

Oh, I wish I did have somewhere like this to go Francesca, it would be magical. I have to make do with a rather large park in the city.

Seeing nature’s beauty destroyed is heart breaking.

  13. This is magic… glad to know it…
    Blessings, Amy

  14. Juliet says:

It looks so incredibly magical, all of the stills are so beautiful. I’m going to try and see this as soon as I can!

    • Skylark says:

The stills don’t show half the beauty of it, wait until you see inside the cottage, and the field of wild strawberries! I love Grandma’s fashion sense too. I think you will like it a lot ♥

  29. Ari says:

Hello Sky! I just wanted to tell you how enjoyable it’s been to read your blog. I’m sort of a fledgling writer myself, and your blog is the most inspiring thing I have ever been fortunate enough to trip over on the web! xD To be frank, you are my true honest-to-goodness role model, and I would really, *really* love if you could post a few princess lessons.

ps; Do you listen to music while you write? Recently I’ve become obsessed with anything by Utada Hikaru, although what I listen to varies from week to week. You should check it out. (:

  30. Ari says:

I also have a blog, if you’d like to take a peek.

    http://notwendydarling.blogspot.com/2010/04/dream-is-wish.html

I was inspired by you to create a blog in the first place, I suppose, but I’ve been harboring these feelings for awhile now.

  31. Ryan says:

    Hello there,
I got to watch this film earlier this week (there’s now an English language DVD with subtitles available via America) and found it fascinating, a modern day fairytale with such beautiful images. I can see why you empathise with Mai, and why you love the beautiful world she shares with Granny.

Incidentally, I don’t think you should ever question that you are special or unique or important, nor should you feel guilty for any way you think or feel, no matter what others think or if they blame you for it. Deep down, you know you’re exactly who you are, and why you’re extraordinary.

    Enjoy England,
    Ryan

  32. chymecindy says:

Such beautiful images. I love your blog.

  33. Karin says:

I just watched this film today! one word BEAUTIFUL(:

  34. Aliénor says:

Soo beautiful :) That house it amazing!

  35. Mari says:

The pictures are absolutely beautiful. I have no idea where I should look for this movie, but it seems pretty interesting. I too get upset when people destroy nature. There is a big, unfinished building in my city that we pass quite often. The people building it didn’t have enough money to finish, so they abandoned it. It’s huge, and it’s starting to rust. It makes me angry every time I see it.
