chestnut, auburn, sepia, bay

January 19, 2010

Sometimes I wish I were blonde, with thistle down hair that floats on the breeze and wispy brows, and lashes that are barely there. There is something so fragile about pale skin, pale hair, lilac unicorns made in to girls against their will.

Then I remember all the brave, proud brunettes. I remember Wendy and Dorothy and Sara and dearest Lucy and I tie my braids like a badge of honour. For we are the fierce, clever, plucky little maidens who save lost boys and open wardrobe doors and remember, in our dreams, how to fly.

Oh Skye, you are absolutely beautiful (I’m including your mind as well).

I often feel the opposite, I wish I had brown hair like all my favourite heroines.

    xxx Vera

We always wish for what we do not have? Your hair is such a beautiful colour though, it reminds me of mermaids.

      x.

  2. Christina says:

    hehe that’s beautiful..! I don’t what color I would love to have,for now I’m stuck with black,like witches and weird women,for I’m a weird girl..! :P

  3. Michelle says:

yes, thank you! i feel a little lost when i look at lovely pale blondes, looking so effortlessly fragile. but i am a proud, tanned brunette all the same. pocahontas+jasmine power and whatnot. x

    • Skylark says:

I think it is good to be proud, sometimes being a brunette makes me feel so common… red heads and blondes are rarer after all, however I just think of it as having a lot more sisters out there.

  4. Kimberly says:

Thank you! I needed that. (Lucy is my hero! :) )

  5. Lauryn says:

Being blonde is over-rated. I was really happy when my platinum blonde turned brown as I got older. This summer I bleached it to see how it’d look now just for the heck of it and it was great for about a month. Then I really wished I hadn’t.

  6. Blair says:

    It’s true, isn’t it?

Well, I’m starting to enjoy being a quite pale brunette…a nice mix of the two perhaps?

  7. kagitsune says:

Huh, I don’t think I ever associated my hair color with a certain archetype… wow.

I used to wish for red hair to blend with my dark brown or black. It reminded me of those rough, independent girls so far on the opposite end of the spectrum from me.

I suppose I, too, had forgotten those brunette heroines for a moment. Thanks for the reminder, Skye. :3

    • Skylark says:

Really? I think hair colours are over-stereotyped if anything, especially for girls. Blondes are always divas or the shy pretty ones, brunettes are clever or brave, red heads are fiery and wild.. it gets tedious sometimes.

Hello, my sister just introduced me to your blog, and I love it. She showed me this post because I always used to wish I had red hair like her. After all, she got all the compliments. ;)

    I love your blog!
    Out of the Blue:jane

    • Skylark says:

Hello Jane, it is nice to meet you. Having a sister with Red hair must be hard, it does stand out of course, but brown is beautiful in a quieter, secretive way.

  9. Nami says:

Amazing, I was just thinking, while I never question my looks because I think I should be happy with how I am, that pale skin is quite lovely and I would’ve loved to have it…

Then I remember how proud I am to be who I am and have peace with it.

  10. It’s amazing how hair color can affect the way we imagine ourselves isn’t it? I’ve always wished my hair were a very pale blonde – wispss of ethereal silver-white. I was born with very pale hair but it turned dark gold along the way. Now, I am pleased with my gold hair. Matches my sunny disposition I think.
All hair colors have their own unique beauty.
    You are lovely!

    • Skylark says:

I think in part it comes from all the things we watch as little girls, where we are type cast by our hair colour. Gold hair is beautiful and warm.

  11. LadyG says:

Not all blondes are wispy, ethereal creatures. Some are downright feisty.

And, despite the illustrators and movie portrayals indicating otherwise, Lucy (Pevensie) had golden hair. :)

    • Skylark says:

Thats true, these are just stereotypes we grow up with.

I know it says so in the books, but I understand why they make her a brunette all of the time.. somehow it seems more Lucy, and that’s how I always imagined her.

  12. Lyn says:

I always wished I was blonde when I was younger but now I love my brunette hair.

  13. Tabitha says:

I dyed my hair red about a year ago. It was such a relief to have in brown (my natural color) again. It’s so mysterious + rich + lovely. I used to wish I had blue eyes, too… but now I’m learning to appreciate my warm brown ones. Blue and blonde may be the colors of the sea, but brown is the color of forests! <3

    • Skylark says:

I dye my hair sometimes, I like trying different shades of brown, darker or lighter or copper tinted, but I’m always loyal to being a brunette.

Brown eyes are gorgeous, they always look bigger and deeper than blue.

  14. you are honestly so beautiful. I cannot even come close to how beautiful you are, you look like you have just jumped out of a book.

You make me happy with this about brown hair too, xxx

  15. Gwen says:

I used to have white blonde hair when I was younger, now it’s turned into a mousy blonde/brown and I find it really dull. I long for summer days to turn it lighter again.

    • Skylark says:

Does your hair sun-bleach too? Mine tends to, although I rarely spend enough time in the sun for it these days.

      • Gwen says:

It sun-bleaches really quickly, one day can make a huge difference but it takes a few to get it to a shade I like. If I use lemon on my hair it changes even quicker.

  16. megan-mae says:

i cut my hair very short and dyed it blonde when i was in grade 9 or 10. It was very Samaire Armstrong (she was Anna on The OC, and the girl in the clip for Bad Day by Daniel Powter).

Sometimes i get very strong urges to dye my hair the palest blonde. Pale skin and pale hair really is quite lovely. Have you ever read I Capture The Castle? i think you’d enjoy it if you haven’t. Anyway, the stepmother, Topaz, is remarkably pale and fair haired. There are times i’d love to look like her.

But i can’t bring myself to bleach the colour out of my hair. It’s a very pretty shade of red and i’m rather fond of it. (Actually, i coloured it brown a few months ago and it still hasn’t quite faded yet, so, well, i’m not really very much of a redhead at present).

Sometimes i just need a break from having rare red hair. i’ve dyed my hair brown about 4 times over the years now. i love being a brunette. i think all brunettes have eyes that really stand out. My eyes always look brighter when my hair is brown. And you have perfectly shaped eyebrows, so i think your eyes are most definitely your feature (other than that wonderful heart and mind of yours, of course).

    • Skylark says:

I have read it! I Capture the Castle is one of my favourite books, and I love the movie of it as well. I think I’d rather look like Rose though, she is my favourite (aside from Cassie)

Unfortunately most hair doesn’t like to be bleached, I prefer to stick with dark colours and have it healthy and shiny.

Thank you so much, I’m more fond of my eyes than my hair, they are blue-green. Your red hair sounds lovely!

  17. Claudia says:

I love being a brunette as well! I have seen myself blonde in a wig…and you know…it just wasn’t ME. I love that brunettes naturally belong to the earth and forest. I will always ADORE red hair. Its just so unique and beautiful…(especially when curly) but I’m okay with others having it and cherishing my own dark chocolate coloured locks. ^_^

  18. you are so, so pretty. and yay for brunettes! i’ve always been proud to be a brown hair. although it used to be a tad-ish blonde when i was young. all the days spent out in the sun at the pool. but since i never go out in the sun, my hair continues to be dark. xx

  19. Emily says:

i sometimes wish i were blonde too, but then i don’t think i could live without my dark hair. i’ve come close to dying it a few times, but i feel like my hair colour is such a big part of me. i can never go through with it …

  20. Beautiful photo and words! I really enjoyed reading this while at the airport. It made me feel quite magical with the hair I have, although if I had grey eyes I would make it dark like Sara Crewe. It’s so interesting how hair colour often plays a large part in projecting one’s image. I think a person is quite fortunate when their natural hair colour matches their skin tone. There are also some people who actually look better with a darkened or lightened shade, although it can be tedious to maintain at times. It’s fun to meet others with personalities that betray the common stereotype for their hair, and those who have a mix of traits that escape any labels. Regardless of colour, I’ve always enjoyed finding thin or thick ribbons of highlights in it, or a mirror-like shine in solid shades. If only there was a magic pill to switch between light and dark without wrecking one’s strands.

    • Skylark says:

This is such a beautiful comment, thank you. It does play such a big role in our image, I think if I were blonde I’d be a completely different person. Ribbons work wonders, I agree.

  21. Yajaira says:

I’ve always wanted long curled tendrils in the most daring shade of dark blood red.
To me there is always something irresistibly mystical about red haired people.
My other favorite shades are true black, blue black, platinum blonde, and chocolate brunette.

  22. Snow says:

Thank You for this! I needed the reminder, since I’m a brunette too… I’ve always wished for golden curls but instead I got brown and straight hair. So, really, thanks :)

  23. Miss Rae says:

I would simply look silly with blonde hair haha! I adore my dark hair, it compliments my chocolate eyes and skin :]
I guess we have always wished for something other than ourselves. That’s normal.
We just have to remember our natural born-with attributes are just as beautiful and unique.

  24. Ephie says:

Sometimes I wish my hair was blonde, i’m already blonde. It’s like wearing white, you see it so much faster if it starts to fade and get dirty..
    :(

  25. Lydia says:

I know how you feel. Sometimes I feel the same way…But brunettes are good too. :) I know…I am one. :D

  26. Siobhan says:

You look like a fairy tale, all that long hair- beautiful… And yes brunettes are underrated! I wouldn’t change my hair for the world, it’s as black as cats, deep dark night or a curse but lights up like fire in the sun, as red as magic…

  27. Eve says:

My hair used to be shockingly blonde, then turned golden, and now it’s a tawny colour, like a mouse. Though it’s unfitting for my personality. My friend calls it ‘lioness brown’.

I wanted to be a ginger so bad growing up. Ultra pale, covered in freckles, the kinky hair – the works.

  28. Elena says:

Hm.. I think no matter what people will be unsatisfied with how they look. I have strawberry blonde hair, freckles and pale skin. I hated having pale skin, people would often ask if I was sick because of it being so pale. Or I’d get awful sunburns on my face. I found when I dyed my hair dark brown once it was the most confident I’d ever felt!
