Sorry Harry, but Mildred and Ethel won my heart first. Cold nights and bats and tapioca pudding. I’d rather go to Miss Cackle’s all the same.

    what movie is this?

    • Skylark says:

Its not a movie but a series, it’s called ‘The Worst Witch’ based on the books by Jill Murphy which are lovely as well.

  2. pretty_random says:

I like Harry Potter but could never get into this show for some reason. I think thats strange :P

    • Skylark says:

I really like both, but I grew up watching Mildred’s adventures and playing ‘witch school’ games with my friends. For me it has sentimental value.

  3. Graceadieu says:

I was just thinking about this series the other night! I was so infatuated with Kate Duchêne as Miss Hardbroom when I was younger. In fact, I may still be. ;) She was my idol for a spell, so to speak.

  4. Sanyu says:

    I love Worst Witch!

  5. Eilidh says:

Oh, I’ve always loved The Worst Witch books! I preferred them to Harry Potter too :P The TV series was amazing.

  6. Cherish says:

    Oh wow!
I’d completely forgotten about The Worst Witch! I used to watch it religiously as a kid.

Did you see the later series where they went off to witching university?
I thought it wasn’t as good, it lost a lot of the charm, but I watched it all the same, just to see what became of Mildred and her friends.

    xx

    • Skylark says:

Weirdsister College, yes I watched that too. I liked the original series better, but it was interesting in its own way.

  7. Salvia says:

I began to reread the books this week. Wish I could get the series on DVD. I loved it when I was younger.

  8. I loved that show as child. It aired in Finland too. I even dressed up as one of the withceson my birthday party.

  9. Suzi says:

I love this series, and the books – two of my favourite things! It’s made me smile just to see these pictures :)

  10. I used (and still) love the Worst Witch. I wonder what age group goes to Miss Cackle’s. I would still try and go to Hogwarts. If I were a witch!!!

    :)

  11. Bek says:

I loved this show!! the second series was never as good, oh the memories of miss cackle’s

  12. Suzannah says:

  14. Miss Roxy says:

I used to love this as a kid – I could never get into the Harry Potter books for some reason.
I always found The Worst Witch so charming and rather sweet :)

  15. Bri says:

I have never seen or heard of this series before, but I am the biggest Harry Potter fan. What is it about schools for magic that is fascinating? Other than the fact that they are awesome…Haha

    • Skylark says:

I’m not sure, but I agree, Magic schools are wonderful. Although I’d be just as happy to have Chrestomanci for a tutor.

  16. Kate says:

I remember this from when I was a kid! I completely forgot about it…thanks for bringing back the memories…I need to go find a way to watch this again!! :D

(I also recall watching a live action series of Alice in Wonderland as a child too…those were the days!)

    • Skylark says:

I have seen the live action Alice too, I especially liked Through the Looking Glass, although the Jabberwock scared me.

  17. Merry says:

I remember watching that here in the US! ^_^ It was such a good show. I wish they had it online for people to watch. *goes off to look*

  18. Dawne says:

Eep, Skye, why did you feature this? I’m constantly running into kids’ books I never read as a child and I’m running out of excuses for when i go to bookstores. =D I read the preview on amazon for the first book and this is simply amazing.

  19. Morgan says:

“Sorry Harry, but Mildred and Ethel won my heart first.”

For some reason, that made me laugh.
This looks like a darling show. Does it still air on TV?

  20. Rikki says:

I so agree. I fell in love with these books (and movies! Plus, Tim Curry played the wizard, didn’t he?!) when I was in grade school, long before Harry Potter!

  21. Ine says:

I love Cackle’s Academy! I watched it every Christmas (that’s when it’s on in Norway) when I was younger.

  22. I totally missed this one. Never heard of it before but it looks super cute. I will have to and find the DVDs.

  23. Dreamsenshi says:

Yay! I remembered seeing that on TV when I was little, but I couldn’t remember what it was called to find it again! Now perhaps I can look it up. :)

  24. Anne Marie says:

    Mildred Hubble always in trouble.
Used to LOVE this show! :)

  25. Elise says:

I loved that serie. Mildred looks exactly like a girl that was in my ballet class at that age ^^. Personally, I liked the second season better because it had a bit more twists to the story.

    • Skylark says:

I like the first season best because I always like firsts, but the second season has Sybil who I like too.

  26. felysion says:

    I remember that show!

I think I watched it when I was in Middle School. I remember on days I was home sick I would watch it. Harry Potter cannot hold a coin to those hold memories.

  27. Princess June says:

I LOVE The Worst Witch! I used to watch it every day after school.

I love Harry Potter too but in a different way. Both The Worst Witch & Harry Potter will always hold a place in my heart each in their own way.

Whenever I got picked on at school or had a bad day I always had The Worst Witch and Harry Potter to look forward to.

  28. Cara says:

I remember reading Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch books when I was very young, then I used to watch ‘The Worst Witch’ series when it was shown on the BBC, it was my favorite series! I adored the books and loved Mildred Hubble and Maude Moonshine and all of her friends and so wished I could attend Cackle’s Academy with them. I was organsing my book shelves last week and found that I still have several of the Worst Witch books! I was pleasently surprised. Every so-often I find myself humming the opening credits theme for the programme, such happy memories of my childhood.

  29. Azu says:

Haha, I always get called Mildred Embrollo (the Spanish name for this witch) because my name is Mildred. This is a great TV show and I still watch it sometimes. :)

  30. Princess Danielle says:

I just recently watched an episode of this show. I used to watch it all the time. I absolutely love it!

  31. Anna says:

Oh my goodness, I remember this. I think ABC Family showed this series during Halloween a long time ago.

  32. Karin says:

  34. Nico says:

OMG I totally forgot about the worst witch. This was one of my faves as a kid. these were great stories, i loved Maude :) but harry potter won me over big time lol

  35. HannahMia says:

Oh, I used to love The Worst Witch so much! My friends & I decided that she was the original Harry, if only they’d put more effort into those programmes!

  36. Nix says:

The series was great and the original was even better! I loved that movie :)

  37. Krissy says:

I LOVE this program!! The Canadian accents make it even better.
