A state of happiness

Finds

Meg, wearing mackintosh boots and a red mackintosh, and with a red sou’wester tied beneath her chin, splashed down the drive, and under dripping oak-trees, in a state of happiness deeper and more perfect than any other she was likely to know while she lived in this world. Elizabeth Goudge

I need a new pair of mackintosh boots (we call them Wellingtons) for puddle jumping. However I have two old books and a jar with a cork lid in which I am going to plant a fairy garden to keep on my mantlepiece.

Looks like the fairies are excited for the garden, too – check out the orbs in the upper right.

I think they may have come out of one of the old books when I opened it, but they do so like appearing in my photos.

  2. I have been seeing some very odd Wellingtons of late: manic skulls with roses? Psychedelic? Very strange. I’d go for a classic hunter green myself, none of that other nonsense :)

I agree, though I admit to admiring a simple floral pair.

By the way, I wanted to say I love reading your fashion blog because I recognise all the stores you mention, only it won’t let me comment for some reason.

And, how does one create a fairy garden?

Ooo, a fairy garden such as those ‘moss terrariums’ that I’ve seen floating about lately? I love those, the concept is so whimsical. (and I discovered some moss that’s perfect for such a project in my backyard several days ago… :) )

And out of curiousity, who is the author of the Robin Hood book pictured above? I can’t read it in the picture because the print is too small.

    • Skylark says:

Yes yes, I have been longing to make one of those for ages. I’ve only just found the right type of jar.

The Chronicles of Robin Hood is by Rosemary Sutcliff.

  8. Oh! … Elizabeth Goudge! … :) :) …

Have you ever read any of her other books? “Linnets and Valerians” and “The Blue Hills” are among my favorites of all time!!

By the bye … jumping puddles in Wellingtons sounds delightful! :)

    • Skylark says:

I have only read ‘The Little White Horse’ but I am looking forward to reading more of her work, I will keep an eye out for both of those!

  9. Valerie says:

I would love to see the fairy garden when it’s finished. :D I’m sure it will be lovely.

And I’ve always wanted a pair of bright red wellies.

This is such a lovely diary – I love your pictures and words. Where I live we call them ‘gum boots’, but wellington boots is by far a nicer name.

I just started a new diary (I needed a fresh start) so please drop by if you can. xx

there’s something special about the little things.
I’ve just recently jumped into a water puddle myself and splashed around in old fashioned boots.
It relieves a lot of stress and it feels like I can just splash my troubles away…
